In this autobiographical account, which in its final section approaches the form of a literary essay, Amélie Nothomb relives the most painful episode of her life: the abuse she suffered at the age of twelve, which led to prolonged anorexia throughout her adolescence. Based on this extreme experience, the author reflects on writing as a form of salvation and a vital learning process: a way of staying afloat, like birds in flight, and of rising above the abyss.
